UM tackle Antonio Dixon hospitalized

sdegnan@MiamiHerald.com

University of Miami defensive tackle Antonio Dixon was in good condition after being admitted to Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables on Wednesday morning, apparently suffering from the effects of the sun and intense heat during practice.

Dixon was transported to the hospital by an ambulance toward the end of Wednesday's practice session and ''is expected to remain overnight to finalize precautionary testing in determining cause,'' according to a statement released late Wednesday afternoon by UM sports information representative Kerwin Lonzo.

''Antonio Dixon dehydrated, so we took him over to [Doctors] Hospital just to get more fluids in him,'' UM coach Randy Shannon said after the practice.

Wednesday's practice was the first in which players wore full pads and had contact.

Dixon, who is 6-3 and 322 pounds, grew up in Miami and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.

He is one of several Hurricanes who have had problems with the heat since practice began Saturday. On Tuesday, running backs Damien Berry and Lee Chambers left practice early because of heat-related problems.

Miami begins its practices by 7:45 a.m., and Wednesday's ended just before 10:30. Reporters can watch only the first 20 minutes or so of practice while the players warm up and do stretching drills.
