Britain's Gavin out of Olympic Boxing tournament

The Sports Network

Britain's Frankie Gavin, the reigning World Lightweight Boxing Champion, will miss the Olympics after failing to make weight.

Gavin, who won his world title back in 2007 over Italy's Domenico Valentino, had struggled to control his weight. The 22-year-old southpaw fights in the 60kg class (132 lbs). Terry Edwards, coach of the British Team, confirmed that his fighter wasn't likely to get under the required weight in time for Friday's weigh-in.

Gavin was considered one of the favorites to win the gold medal in his weight class. He will not be allowed to move up in class since Britain already has a qualified boxer in the light-welterweight division -- Bradley Saunders.
