The Miami Herald recommends
For Broward School Board, District 1
Posted on Tue, Aug. 05, 2008
All voters in Southeast Broward may cast ballots in the Aug. 26 primary for the nonpartisan District 1 School Board seat. Three candidates are running; any runoff would be on the Nov. 4 ballot.
On the ballot are Diane Ziol Caulfield, 56, a retired supervisor for evening trades with the school system; Ann Murray, 65, a manager in the system's transportation department who is a long-time Hollywood activist and twice candidate for City Commission; and Richard Saltrick, 41, a civil engineer for Miami Beach.
Our choice is for Mr. Saltrick, who comes from a family of teachers and has the motivation and background to be a solid member of the board.
He would bring professional diversity. All of the nine sitting board members have worked for this or some other school system, six having careers in the schools. That's not a minus for the individuals, but a school board should be representative of its entire community. Mr. Saltrick is the son of teachers, and his wife works for Teach for America. His engineering background would help give the board insights into one of the most costly and, at times, difficult tasks it has -- building and managing school infrastructure. Not only does he hold a engineering degree but also a master's in public policy from Harvard University.
Finally, Mr. Saltrick knows this district well. A native, he has served on three Hollywood city boards and committees. He wants to prioritize capital needs, especially for older schools; fund salaries for top teachers; and restore parents' confidence.
In the nonpartisan primary for Broward School Board District 1, The Miami Herald recommends RICHARD SALTRICK.
