A most timely show, Let the Games Begin: The Art of Competition and Just Plain Fun was organized by the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach to coincide with Summer Olympics in Beijing. The exhibition about the importance of games throughout time and across cultures is divided into five sections: the Olympics, Ball Games, Games of Skill and Chance, Just Plain Fun, and the interactive Game Room. The works shown, most part of the Norton collection, represent the cultures of China, the United States, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Germany, France, Italy, Russia and Japan.

Above is the black and white photograph, Arqueros (Archers), taken in 1945 by Dr. Roberto Machado (Cuban, 1905-1979) and now part of the Norton collection. Archery first appeared as an Olympic sport in the 1900 Paris Games, which was also the first time Cuba competed in the Olympics. But during World War II, when this photograph was taken, the Olympic Games had ceased; they resumed three years later at Wembley Stadium in London.

Let the Games Begin runs through Nov. 30 at The Norton Museum of Art, 1451 S. Olive Ave., West Palm Beach; open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday; $8 adults, $3 for visitors ages 13-21, and free to members and children under 13; 561-832-5196 or visit www.norton.org.
